Security of state jobs lures techies

Security of state jobs lures techies

Many B.Tech graduates in the state, who are vying for the posts of village revenue officers and village revenue assistants, are applying for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering-2012. With GATE-2012 clashing with the VRO/VRA exam on February 12, B.Tech graduates are now asking the government to reschedule the exam. They even met revenue minister Raghuveera Reddy and submitted a representation.

Academics attributed this phenomenon to the poor quality of engineering education imparted in the state, and say that most of the engineering graduates lack employable skills in the IT and industrial sectors. Left with no option, the graduates are opting for small-time jobs in other fields, they said. Some also say that it’s the “security” that a government job offers that has driven the engineering graduates to opt for the VRO, VRA posts.

“It’s not that there are no jobs for engineering graduates. But only about 10 per cent of the tech graduates have employable skills,” said Prof. S. Satyanara-yana, VC, OU. Other academics blamed the mushrooming of engineering colleges without basic infrastructure and faculty. “With over 3 lakh B.Tech seats in the state, it has become easy to pursue engineering. Most are opting for B.Tech courses even if they lack the aptitude,” said Prof. D.N. Reddy, former VC, JNTU-Hyderabad. The students, however, say that it is the job security aspect that’s important. “There is no job security in private sector. Even if we get Rs 7,000 as a VRO, it is a government job,” said Mr Dharma Naik, a techie.

Social site users do badly in exams.

Social site users do badly in exams.

LONDON: Fresh research has confirmed what many parents and teachers already feared: social networking sites are damaging students’ academic performance.

The researchers discovered that the majority of students who use Facebook & orkut every day are underachieving by as much as an entire grade compared with those who shun the site. In order to reach their conclusion, researchers discovered how students who spend their time accumulating friends, chatting and “poking” others on the site may devote as little as one hour a week to their academic work.

“Our study shows people who spend more time on Facebook & orkut spend less time studying,” the Times quoted Aryn Karpinski, a researcher in the education department at Ohio State University, as saying. “Every generation has its distractions, but I think Facebook & orkut is a unique phenomenon,” she added.

In the study, Karpinski and a colleague questioned 219 US undergraduates and graduates about their study practices and general internet use, as well as their specific use of Facebook & orkut. They found that 65% of Facebook users accessed their account daily, usually checking it several times to see if they had received new messages. The amount of time spent on Facebook at each log-in varied from just a few minutes to more than an hour.

The Ohio report shows that 68% of students who used Facebook had a “significantly” lower grade point average than those who did not use the site. “It is the equivalent of the difference between getting an A and a B,” said Karpinski.

So friends try to be away from the Social networking sites like Facebook & orkut. This will kill your time & may spoil your career.
