GATE 2012 Results Statistics & Percentile Calculator

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a prestigious all India examination administered and conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technology. Admission to postgraduate programmes with government scholarships/assistantships in engineering colleges/ institutes/ Universities is open to those who qualify through this test. Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, the organizing institute for GATE 2012, has announced the results on 15th March 2012.

In GATE 2012, several new features were introduced. The application process was online with an online fee payment option and downloadable admit cards. The sale of offline applications and mailing the hardcopy admit cards have been discontinued. For the first time, the images of the Optical Response Sheet (ORS) were made available on the GATE websites along with the responses picked up by the scanner so that the candidates could cross-check and make a request for rechecking the ORS if there were any discrepancies.

The three hour test in 21 papers was conducted in 860 centers and 170 cities/towns across the country on two days: the computer based online exam in six papers on 29th January 2012 and the offline exam in the remaining fifteen papers on 12th February 2012. A total of 7,77,134 candidates registered for GATE 2012 and 6,86,614 candidates appeared for the exam. Nearly 81% of the total number of candidates who appeared for GATE 2012 were from four papers: Electronics and Communication Engineering (1,76,944), Computer Science and Information Technology (1,56,780), Mechanical Engineering (1,12,320) and
Electrical Engineering (1,10,125).

The total number of candidates qualified in GATE 2012 is 1,08,526. This year, 30,294 OBC candidates qualified in the test, while 23,765 SC/ST and 447 physically challenged candidates qualified. Out of 1,85,198 female candidates who appeared in GATE 2012, 22,896 candidates qualified.

The IIT Delhi zone topped among the other zones with 18,927 candidates figuring in the list of qualified candidates, followed by IIT Madras (17,343), IIT Kharagpur (15,735), IISc Bangalore (14,379), IIT Kanpur (12,469), IIT Roorkee (12,328), IIT Bombay (12,287), and IIT Guwahati (5,058).

The candidates need to apply separately to each of the IITs and IISc to seek admission.

GATE 2012 Percentile Calculator

The percentile calculator provide here, calculate your GATE 2012 Percentile in 3 simple and easy steps.

Step 1
First determine your All India Rank in GATE 2012. Your Rank will be provided with your test results.

Step 2
Secondly, you have to determine the total number of candidates appeared in your paper. This is also provided with the test results.

Step 3
Assign the information from the above two steps in the following equation
P= ((T-R) / T) x 100

where
P=GATE 2011 Percentile,
T=Total number of candidates in your paper in GATE 2012,
R= your All India Rank in GATE 2012.

Example: If your All India Rank was 500 and the total number of candidates in your category was 3000,
The equation will be like this:

P= ((3000-500) / 3000) x 100

P=(2500/3000)*100

P=0.833*100=83.3%

So in the above example, your GATE 2012 Percentile is 83.3%

Security of state jobs lures techies

Security of state jobs lures techies

Many B.Tech graduates in the state, who are vying for the posts of village revenue officers and village revenue assistants, are applying for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering-2012. With GATE-2012 clashing with the VRO/VRA exam on February 12, B.Tech graduates are now asking the government to reschedule the exam. They even met revenue minister Raghuveera Reddy and submitted a representation.

Academics attributed this phenomenon to the poor quality of engineering education imparted in the state, and say that most of the engineering graduates lack employable skills in the IT and industrial sectors. Left with no option, the graduates are opting for small-time jobs in other fields, they said. Some also say that it’s the “security” that a government job offers that has driven the engineering graduates to opt for the VRO, VRA posts.

“It’s not that there are no jobs for engineering graduates. But only about 10 per cent of the tech graduates have employable skills,” said Prof. S. Satyanara-yana, VC, OU. Other academics blamed the mushrooming of engineering colleges without basic infrastructure and faculty. “With over 3 lakh B.Tech seats in the state, it has become easy to pursue engineering. Most are opting for B.Tech courses even if they lack the aptitude,” said Prof. D.N. Reddy, former VC, JNTU-Hyderabad. The students, however, say that it is the job security aspect that’s important. “There is no job security in private sector. Even if we get Rs 7,000 as a VRO, it is a government job,” said Mr Dharma Naik, a techie.
