Career as Civil Engineering

Probably there is no one in the world who don’t amaze by seeing the pyramids of Egypt, or beautiful temples of ancient Greece and Rome or the Great Wall of China. The first thought when you see such a wonder would be how they built that kind of monument. It wouldn’t have been possible without Civil Engineers. The good historical monument to your own living roof, the brain behind the structure would be a Civil Engineer.

What ever the construction may be, engineers apply scientific and technical knowledge to address requirements of a construction project. They address the problems and tasks faced by businesses and governments. A fundamental part of engineering is the practical application of specialized scientific knowledge. Engineers need to consider safety, reliability, and cost-effectiveness. However, in recent times, particularly in the last ten years, Civil Engineering course was neglected, as many opted for Computer Science, going by the boom. After effects of this negligence had resulted in to shortage of Civil Engineers in huge numbers globally.

An Overview:

Civil Engineers primary responsibility is to design all construction work as per the given specifications. They are involved in the planning, research, survey and construction of all kinds of buildings as also roads, airports, dams, traffic and transportation systems, irrigation and power plants, water supply and sewage disposal plants, ports and harbours, oil rigs, etc. Basically, they are responsible for planning and designing a project and having it constructed to the required scale.
Structural engineering, water management engineering, highway engineering and environmental engineering are some of the areas civil engineers specialise in. The civil engineer has to plan, research, survey and design the project and then get it constructed to the required scale.

Engineers are often the crucial link between the goal and reality. Once a company or government agency decides that it needs a certain product or process, the next step is for an engineer or team of engineers to create it as efficiently as possible within a budget. Engineers have a hand in all the phases of development, from idea conception, design and development, implementation and testing to customer support.

The engineers have to ensure that the structural framework of the building is strong enough to withstand the load for which it is being constructed and also should be able to withstand heat, cold and tremors. Engineers test and inspect products and structures to increase cost-effectiveness and safety.

Requirements:

Organizing ability, practicality, spatial reasoning, excellent analytical and logical reasoning skills are some of the qualities needed to make it as a civil engineer. It is also necessary that you like working with tools, drawing sketches, and conceptualizing forms and structures. The ability to express your ideas precisely to others is a must here. You must be mechanically inclined and ready to work with your hands.

Good logical and mental ability, problem solving skills and an ability to grasp concepts quickly are essential. An ability to express oneself using figures and words, perseverance and judgement are some of the other skills required.

Engineers need to be able to work with a team. Breaking problems down in a systematic way helps to divide the work among team members. You will usually serve as supervisor, ensuring that all team members co-ordinate their parts and communicate effectively to keep the project running smoothly.

The most successful engineers have a balance of creative and scientific skills and can master both established techniques and innovate new ones. Discipline, patience, and perseverance are also important qualities in an engineer-the ability to communicate with others is also a key skill, as engineers need to communicate effectively within their teams and with others.

How to get in:

After your SSC (10th Class) you can opt for a diploma course after which, you can go for a degree. Alternatively, after 10+2 one can study engineering by any one of the following options:

Through Joint Entrance Exam JEE- IIT (Indian institute of Technology) or EAMCET or AIEEE, one can join National level or state engineering colleges.

Eligibility for B.Tech Civil: Your marks scored in 12th exam, particularly in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Maths are also taken into consideration along with entrance test score.

The BE/B.Tech degree course in civil engineering covers structures, construction and surveying, foundation, fluid mechanics, hydraulics, environmental engineering, irrigation engineering, soil analysis, strength of materials, cost and works management and pollution control.

After graduating students can go in for postgraduate studies in India or abroad that will culminate in a master’s degree. Further study up to Ph.D. level is also an option.

Specializations:

Master of Planning in Urban & Regional Planning/Housing/Transport planning

Master in Computer Application

P.G. Diploma in Cement Technology/Construction/Quality control.

M.Tech in Earthquake Engineering, Remote Sensing

Job Opportunities:

You can start private practice as a consultant or work with municipalities, government construction, regulatory agencies, transportation authorities, architects or urban planners. Others can seek employment in construction or manufacturing companies. You can also work for organizations like ONGC, Railways and various departments of state and central governments.

Employment opportunities are exist in the government sector, including the railways, departments of irrigation, public works, roads, airports, harbors municipal corporations, telecommunications departments, etc. You can also work as a commissioned officer in the defense services, Research organizations and laboratories.

Career Prospects:

The entry of multinational companies has increased the demand for good engineers. Mainly due to the opening up of the economy and privatisation of infrastructure developments there is expected to be a good demand for civil engineers. Though students still doubtful on Civil Engineering course, It is all the attitude that pays a lot this kind of speciality courses. If you are passionate about creating wonders in construction, designing and planning, you can select this course. The growth momentum is high in this segment as shortage of civil engineers is huge.

Career as Aerospace Engineer

Aerospace Engineers work in one of the most technologically advanced branches of engineering. They design, construct and test aircraft, missiles, satellites, rockets, spacecrafts and anything that flies. Besides this, they are also involved in researching new materials, engines, body shapes and structures. This job is not just about science, it’s also about creativity. You will not only give wings to your imagination but also make it fly.

You will conceptualize a project, say an Indian lunar mission. You will be involved in all steps from the drawing board to the planning committee to the implementation team. You will think of various designs most suitable for a spacecraft for this kind of mission. You will then iron out your differences with other engineers and come to a consensus. Then comes testing a smaller model of this spacecraft in a wind tunnel and authorizing its airworthiness. The final stage involves building the aircraft, testing it all over again and finally handing it over.

But your job will not end at that. You will act as a consultant to the mission and trouble-shoot any problems that may arise. Pretty cool stuff for an engineer!

Requirements:

You need to have good mathematical and logical skills. You also need to be good at organizing. You will be working in teams of cross-sectional skills and as such you must be able to get on well with people at all levels. You should be able to keep calm under pressure and be a problem solver. You should also like working with tools, drawing complex sketches and thinking up forms and structures.

This is a field where you are required to constantly update yourself with the latest innovations and technologies. So be prepared to read a lot. The ability to express one’s ideas clearly to others comes in handy too. You should also be creative and analytical with an eye for detail.

Academic Qualifications:

You need to be a BE/B.Tech. in aerospace engineering.

There are also diploma courses, which you can pursue after 10+2 but you will need to complete your degree before you get a good job. After graduation, you could pursue an M.Tech. or Ph.D. in aeronautics. Then there are exams conducted by the AeSI (Aeronautical Society Of India). This exam is considered equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering.

You will study subjects like Principles of Flight, Aerodynamics, Aircraft structure, Propulsion, Avionics, Electronics, Metro logy, as well as Airworthiness Regulations and Air Traffic Control.

You will then have to choose an area of specialization namely, aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, navigation and control, instrumentation and communication, etc. You could also specialize in aerospace products viz., commercial transport, military fighter jets, helicopters, spacecrafts, missiles or rockets.

Job Opportunities:

The Indian aerospace industry is growing rapidly but as compared to the Europe or the United States it is small in size. In India you will most likely be employed in government owned enterprises such as ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization), DRDO (Defense Research and Development Organization), HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd.), NAL (National Aeronautics Labs), etc. The new area of opportunities are emerging as many global airlines operators and aircraft companies planning to open their MRO- Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul facilities in India. A lot of prestige is associated with working in these organizations and they attract the top brains in the country.

You could also work for airlines like Air India, Indian Airlines, Jet Airways, KingFisher etc. Openings also exist in civil aviation departments as well as the Indian Air Force.
There is no dearth of opportunities for those who wish to work abroad. In fact, a large percentage of engineers at NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration, United States) are Indians. The same is the case with aerospace giants like Boeing, McDonnell Douglas, etc.

Money & Other Benefits:

As a trainee Aerospace Engineer you will earn about Rs 25,000 or more per month, if you get into an airlines. Research organizations, aircraft developing and manufacturing organizations and others pay around Rs 12,000 per month.

After a couple of year’s experience, you could be easily making around Rs 80,000 a month. Plus you get all the added benefits reserved for government servants.

Career Prospects:

The airline industry is always looking for new aeroplanes that are bigger, better, more economical and off late more environment friendly. That is how the Boeing 707 developed into the 747 and now into the 747-400. But now airlines want new generation planes able to take thrice as many passengers at many times the speed of sound. The race is on to develop this next generation airline. Which means that aerospace engineers are a lot in demand.

Space is another booming business with the need to launch communication and weather satellites into various orbits. Space vacations may become a reality sooner than we think, thanks to the landmark space flight taken by US millionaire Dennis Tito. Defense as usual is an industry which constantly requires new and better technologies and the Indian private sector is all set to set shop now that the government has thrown open this sector to private participation.

A Career in Ethical Hacking

Ethical hackers prevent us from hacking and the hacker activities. In a true sense hacking was a harmless activity, but later associated with crime and criminals. Companies employ ethical hackers to test system security and report problems without taking any advantage. Ethical hacker is sometimes called a white hat and an unethical hacker is called a black hat. White hats try to break the system to fix the problem where as black hats break the system for financial benefit.

For hacking to be deemed ethical, the hacker must obey certain rules.
1. Hacker must have permission to probe the network and attempt to identify security risks.
2. Must respect the individual's or company's privacy and only go looking for security issues.
3. Must report all security vulnerabilities detected to the company, not leaving anything open for someone else to come in at a later time.
4. Must let the software developer or hardware manufacturer know about any security vulnerabilities located in their software or hardware if not already known by the company.
The work that ethical hackers do for organizations has helped improve system security and is quite successful.

The main advantage ethical hacking is that companies are able to pay computer techs to attack their own system to learn where the weak spots are. This prevents identity theft and the leaking of vital information. When a company learns about security lacking in their system, it allows them to implement stronger security measures.
The disadvantage of ethical hacking is the temptation that arises from the knowledge that is gained. A person may be tempted to do something unethical for personal gain. Further disadvantages could lead to security breach and development of malicious viruses or malware.
The various types of hacking are e-mail hacking, google hacking, websites and databases hacking, windows passwords cracking, metasploit, wireless cracking, mobile hacking, etc.
Various techniques implemented in hacking are:

1. Phishing:
It the act of attempting to acquire information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity. Phishing emails may contain links to websites are infected  malware. is typically carried out by email spoofing   instant messaging, and it often directs users to enter details in a fake website whose look and feel  almost identical the original site. Various Phishing techniques are Spear phishing, Clone phishing, Whaling etc.

2. Key logger:
A logger a hardware device or a software program that records the real time activity of a computer user including the keyboard keys they press. Most key loggers allow not only keyboard keystrokes be captured but also are often capable of collecting screen captures from the computer. Key loggers are sometimes part of malware  downloaded onto computers without the owners' knowledge. Detecting the presence of a key logger on a computer can be difficult. There are 2 types of key loggers:
a. Software key logger
     i. Remote
     ii. Local
b. Hardware key logger * Perfect key logger is software which captures the keystrokes on victim system. * www.blazingtools.com to detect if keylogger is present in the system.

3. Trojan horse:
A horse, or , is a hacking program which gains privileged access to the operating system, often including a backdoor allowing unauthorized access to the target's computer. do not attempt to inject themselves into other files like a computer virus. Trojan horses steal information, or harm their host computer systems. may use drive-by downloads  install via online games or internet-driven applications in order to reach target computers.
* Beast Trojan horse is software to create Trojan horses and to send to the victim system

4. Social engineering:
A It is a term that describes a non-technical kind of intrusion that relies heavily on human interaction and often involves tricking other people to break normal security procedures. It can be easier to trick people than to hack into computing systems by force. Social engineers get personal information or access to computing systems by exploiting people's natural tendency to want to trust and be helpful, and by taking advantage of our tendency to act quickly when faced with a crisis. Social Engineer commonly use email, the Internet, or the telephone to trick people into revealing sensitive information or get them to do something that is against policy.
Some different types of social engineering are: * Spam scams/phishing: through e-mails, steal personal or private information or passwords, or trick you out of money. * Impersonation: attackers pose as someone in authority, or an IT representative, in order to obtain information or direct access to systems. For targeted attacks, hackers will even go through dumpsters or do other research so they know enough to convince you to trust them.

BNC:
A  (short for ) is a piece of software that is used to relay traffic and connections in computer networks, much like a proxy. Using a BNC allows a user to hide the original source of the user's connection, providing privacy  well as the ability to route traffic through a specific location. A BNC also be used to hide the true target to which a user connects.
* Tomodo firewall and zone alarm firewall are the 2 firewalls which can help the victim to     close all the proxy paths. * www.whatismyip.com to show the original public ip address * www.proxy.org show 1000’s of proxy’s that a hacker can use to hide his public ip     address. * www.newipnew.com to get new proxy ip address * Tor software is used to create chain of proxy addresses * www.sectools.org to download ip bouncers by hackers * Cavaj is a decompiler of java which gives source code by inputting .class file * Havij is an advanced SQL injection tool used by hackers to extract data from database    by copying URL of a website. Make sure the sites are not venerable to hackers. * Wireshark software is the best sniffer (a technique that captures packets over network)     in the world, which can show the various operations performed on a webpage.
Key stroke is the most frequently used hacking technique by level – 1 hacker.
Career Opportunity

According to the Government of India, a demand for 4.7lakh Cyber Security Professionals is estimated by 2015. Various organizations including banks, hotels, airlines, telecom companies, ITES companies, outsourcing units, retail chains, Internet companies, E-Commerce ventures, police departments, government agency and others are hiring full time Cyber Security experts to improve the security of their network infrastructure.

Looking to join a Course / Job Guarantee Program ? BEWARE !!!

Looking to join a Course / Job Guarantee Program ? BEWARE !, Job Seekers & Freshers must read it...

Off the late, I have been witnessing many instances where job seekers (especially Freshers) are getting cheated by FAKE Consultancies and Companies. I don't want that to happen to you. With minimum care, you can avoid getting cheated. Most of you might be aware of these things but still many of you fall in trap by their convincing false claims. These guidelines might help someone who is new to industry or fresh out of college. Please forward this to every one of your friends and try to help at least few of them from getting cheated. --> ChetanaS

Thumb Rule # 1:

DONT BELIEVE IN ANYONE WHO ASKS YOU TO PAY MONEY FOR OFFERING A JOB.

Companies dont need to take any money from you. They might tell you hundreds of stories like they are taking money as a 'Security Deposit' or for 'Infrastructure' purpose. Don\t trust them. If they don't have enough money for their infrastructure, they don't deserve to run the company smile.gif

Instead, I advise you to trust a company who doesn't ask a penny from you even if it is a start-up company. You can work for FREE (or for a very less salary) if you want to get some work experience. That is Ok. But never pay money from your pocket for any reason. In worst-case scenario, if you are paying money, don't forget to take a signed paper (On their Company Notepad with the signature from an official) or a valid bank receipt from them in which it's clearly written that you have paid the money as a refundable security deposit and it should also have the Terms & Conditions.

Also, don't submit/handover your educational certificates (or any original documents) unless it is a very good company and its mandatory for all employees working there. If you are submitting the documents, make sure you get a written proof that they have taken them as per the policy of their organization. (F.Y.I., Good companies never insist their employees to handover originals to them. They generally ask you to bring them during joining period to cross check with the photocopies of the same.) If you blindly believe somebody's words without following the above guidelines then, you will be in serious trouble later when you want to leave the company. I know many freshers who suffered because of this. Hope you don't get into trouble.

Thumb Rule # 2:

DONT BELIEVE IN ANY &;JOB GUARANTEE&; PROGRAMS FROM TRAINING INSTITUTES. 99.0 % OF THEM DON'T KEEP UP THEIR PROMISES.

It has become a trend that many companies/institutes asking jobless people to pay 50,000 (or more) and they will pay you 2,000 per month. Just think logically how foolish it is. For 1 year, they will be paying you (2000X12=) 24,000. So, you are working FREE for them for more than 2 years. In other words, they will be giving you a part of the amount that you have paid to them initially. And they will be enjoying the interest on your money.

These institutes promise you a lot of things when you go for counseling. They will show their past record of placing people in MNC companies and they will tell you the list of companies that come there for the placement. Don't get deceived by them. All those promises will go in vain the moment you pay the money.

In the worst-case scenario, if you must join, then enquire with the students who are studying there and who already studied there. (You can know any regrets from those who are currently studying there and you will know the pros and cons from the people who already studied there. Try to get feedback from those who achieved the job and those who couldn't get the job after the completion of the course).

Unveiling the Secret :- From my experience, I can say that, typically some good training institutes could place those candidates who meet with the company's eligibility criteria such as the engineering branch/stream you have done and the percentage criteria through out the candidate's career. These institutes will lure freshers showing the past records and allows everybody to join the course initially but they keep mum on this issue until you demand the reason why they couldn't place YOU. Remember, even the good institutes are running on a profit basis and NOT on a service basis!

It's always good to get trained in some latest technologies and it improves your chance of getting a job. But don't join any institute based on their promise of giving you a job. When you want to join an institute, remember to enquire with the student who has taken the course and observe the infrastructure, lab availability timings, and the faculty. Some institutes train you using their previous batch students as faculty. Be careful. Preferably, join a branded institute as they maintain quality of education to some level. But generally they are expensive to afford as they try to maintain the quality. Remember? No institute is at your service ! Everything is business. You cannot change that, but you need to be careful.

Thumb Rule # 3:

KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 'PLACEMENT ASSISTANCE& AND &;PLACEMENT GUARANTEE'.

There is a subtle difference between 'Placement Assistance' and 'Placement Guarantee'. The former one means that they will help you to get a job, but no guarantee. If you observe the advertisements carefully, most of them mention '100% Placement Assistance'. Later they can always escape saying that they never guaranteed a job. Even if they do, there will be a famous super star saying "* Conditions Apply !" :-). Ask them what those conditions are.

When some institute says 'Placement Guarantee', ask them to mention it in written and give it to you. (No body can dare to give you. They cleverly say that how can we assure you a job if you don't learn anything. Or they will ask you not to join the course if you don't have the trust on them and they can even say that, there are hundreds of candidates who are pursuing the course and they will slap a question back to you whether they are all fools to join that institute. What will be your reaction? ) See to it that it's clearly mentioned in that document WHAT IF they can't provide you a job. Also tell them that you will pay the money the next moment they provide you a job (Since they are anyway saying job is guaranteed, ask them what's the problem with this...:-)).

Some institutes say that they will recruit you based on your performance in training. This is even more fishy. They can always escape later saying your performance is not up to the mark (Despite of you performing very good) and walk away with your money. Be careful.

In the worst case, if you are paying money, see to it that you pay in installments. (At least, it will save you from losing your entire money). If their training is really good, you will anyway pay the remaining money. Otherwise, you can escape with the least damage. Hope you will keep in mind that I've asked you to join an institute mainly to learn the technology and not for their job guarantee scheme. So when you want to learn, join the best! It may even fetch you a job!

Thumb Rule # 4:

DONT ATTEND THE WRITTEN TESTS/INTERVIEWS THAT ASK YOU TO PAY REGISTRATION FEE. 99.0 % OF THEM ARE FAKE.

An exception is the Government companies. They require some registration fee. That's OK. Remember that good/branded companies never ask you for registration fees. They don't need it. If they are taking money, there is something fishy. Don't pay registration fee unless you are totally convinced. Just walkout if you think something is fishy.

Thumb Rule # 5:

DONT BELIEVE ANYONE WHO SAYS THEY CAN GET YOU THROUGH COMPANIES BY &;BACK-DOOR;.

People in the companies are not senseless to recruit candidates in illegal ways and put them and their own company in trouble. Don't believe if someone says he knows the HR or Project Manager of a company and can provide you job through back door. In the best case, one may get a job if the candidate directly knows high level people and he/she meets all the eligibility criteria of the company and the candidate is talented enough to get a job but he/she didn't get an opportunity to prove his/her ability. But remember, there is no bypass to the process of the company. Process is rigid and it is because of the process, a company grows or shrinks! It's better and happy to stay away from such back door offers instead of getting troubled by them. Think!

Thumb Rule # 6:

DONT BELIEVE IN ANY OF THE &;ONLINE TYPING JOBS' OR 'SMART JOBS' THAT ASK YOU TO PAY SOME MONEY TO EARN MORE.

If they give it for free, then you may think about it. (But, I strictly discourage such jobs because you will lose your will to get into a good job that matches your profile.) Better, simply ignore. Don't pay even a single paisa. They lure you saying you have to pay 500 Rs (or more) initial payment to earn thousands of money every day ! All that is simply trash. You will be wasting your time and you won't earn even a single paisa after paying your/your parents' hard-earned money.

Thumb Rule # 7:

THINK TWICE BEFORE PAYING MONEY TO ANY OF THE JOB SITES.

Personally I dont believe in Premier Memberships, Online Tests that require you to pay money. I believe that&;s just eye wash stuff and will not fetch you any job if you dont have right talent. If you have talent, you will anyway get that job even without the help of those programs. Even if they send your resume to 1000 companies or 10,000 companies, the companies won't recruit you unless they have vacancies and you are suitable for those positions.

If someone says they succeeded through some job program, just think what is the percentage of people succeeded in getting jobs through that program. I don't think it will be more than 1 %. I am not saying all programs are fake ones. But my advice for you is to think twice before you spend your hard-earned money on some job programs. Remember that companies pay money for those job sites if you get selected through them. In such case, there is no need to collect money from you.
