FB introduces Anonymous Login, mobile ad network

Facebook moved Wednesday to bolster the trust of its more than one billion users by providing new controls on how much information is shared on the world's leading social network.

In a major shift away from the notion long preached by Facebook co-founder and chief Mark Zuckerberg of having a single known identity online, people will be able to use applications anonymously at Facebook.

 

The social network also provided a streamlined way for people to control which data applications can access and began letting people rein in what friends can do with shared posts at Facebook.

Zuckerberg announced the changes, along with moves to make Facebook a more stable platform for applications, at the social network's sold-out f8 developers conference.

 

"By giving people more power and control, they are going to trust all the apps we build more and over time use them more," Zuckerberg told an audience of about 1,700 conference attendees.

"That is positive for everyone."

In a statement Facebook explained its new "Anonymous Login" as an easy way for people to try an app without sharing personal information from Facebook..

 

"People tell us they're sometimes worried about sharing information with apps and want more choice and control over what personal information apps receive," the company said. "Today's announcements put power and control squarely in people's hands."

People are scared
In coming weeks, Facebook will also roll out a redesigned dashboard to give users a simple way to manage or remove third-party applications linked to their profiles at the social network.

"This is really big from a user standpoint," JibJab chief executive Gregg Spiridellis said of what he heard during the keynote presentation that opened the one-day Facebook conference.

"I think they are seeing people are scared. They realize that long-term, they need to be trusted."

A JibJab application that can synch with Facebook lets people personalize digital greeting cards with images of themselves or friends.

 

In a major move that promises to help application makers bring in more money and to further challenge Google for online marketing revenue, Facebook is expanding a test of putting its ad-targeting prowess to work for developers.

 

A Facebook Audience Network will what people share publicly about themselves and their interests to pinpoint marketing messages in third-party apps linked to Facebook on desktop computers or mobile devices.

Better targeted ads promise to be more effective and, by extension, more attractive to marketers as well as app makers.

"These guys are so smart," Spiridellis said of the Facebook team. "Every publisher is going to switch to Audience."

 

Hacker way
Facebook revived its popular developers conference after a two-year hiatus and promised that the event will take place annually for the foreseeable future.

 

Zuckerberg said the overarching themes at f8 were ways to help developers "build, grow, and monetize" applications that synch with Facebook.

 

While Zuckerberg still proudly endorses a "hacker way" of creatively bending software in innovative directions, he promised developers that the Facebook platform on which they rely will deliver "stability and consistency."

"My goal is building a culture of loving the people we serve that is as strong as hacking it," Zuckerberg said as he wound up his presentation on a personal note.

He described being in a personally reflective period triggered by Facebook turning 10 years old in February and him marking his 30th birthday in just a few weeks.

It has also been 10 years since he first met his wife, Priscilla Chan, he added.

"It's a time to reflect in life, family, philanthropy and what is important in the 10 years ahead," Zuckerberg said.

Note: If you want to block a SMS sender number, which is not saved in your call log, then long-tap on that SMS and select block number.

Step 1: Go to Apps List

Step 2: Tap on Settings

Step 3: Tap on Call + SMS filter

Step 4: Tap on Blocked number

Step 5: Tap on the number you want to unblock

Step 6: Tap on Unblock (bottom) to unblock that number from blocked list

I like that the keyboard on Android phones tries to predict what I’m going to say next, but sometimes it’s absolutely outlandish—especially when I’m attempting to type a text message in Romanian to my parents. Rather than deal with language packs, I’ve elected to just keep autocorrect off, especially since there’s no “Romanian-English” out there for bilingual kids like me. Here’s how.
Settings are where it’s at

The Android settings panel is the answer to many of your problems. Under Language & input (or another similar title, depending on your version of Android and its interface skin), tap the keyboard you have engaged. I’m using the stock Google Keyboard app instead of the HTC One’s built-in Sense keyboard.

Scroll down to Text correction. Tap Auto-correction. From here, you can select how aggressive you want Google's word-fixing to be, or whether you want it off entirely. If you change your mind mid-way and want the keyboard app to basically write your text messages and emails for you, select Very aggressive and watch Android work its magic on your correspondences.

If you don’t like Google’s correction suggestions either, you can turn them off underShow correction settings. You can choose to show them always, only show them when the phone is in portrait mode, or hide altogether.

Other keyboard applications

This is tricky, but most keyboards app have their own switch to turn off autocorrect. On the HTC One’s Sense 6 keyboard app, for instance, you should just turn off word prediction. On Samsung’s TouchWiz UI, the setting is filed under Predictive text.

If you’re really aching to get autocorrect to turn off, there should be an option buried in the preferences of the keyboard app. They’re usually in the Settings panel. And if there isn’t an option to do so, it might be time to consider a different keyboard.

Apple's Mac operating system is getting a new design and better ways to exchange files, while new features in the software for iPhones and iPads include one for keeping tabs on your health.

Apple executive Craig Federighi pointed out that data from various fitness-related devices now live in silos, so you can't get a comprehensive picture of your health. That will change, he says, with HealthKit coming to the new mobile software, iOS 8. Apple is also working with the Mayo Clinic to make sure your weight, calorie intake and other health metrics are within healthy ranges.

Apple is also making it easier for various devices to work together. You can share songs, movies and books you purchase with your entire family. Macs and mobile gadgets will share more features, and you can share and sync files between the two more easily.

The company is previewing the new features at its 25th annual conference for software developers in San Francisco. The free updates will come this fall, though developers get a test version Monday.

Here are the highlights on what's been announced and what's coming:

Changes to Mac computers:
- The next Mac system will be named Yosemite, after the national park, now that Apple is naming it after California locales rather than cats.

- You'll be able to search for content on the computer and on the Internet at once, similar to a feature available with Microsoft's Windows 8.

- Apple is expanding its iCloud storage service so that you can store and sync files of any type, not just the ones designed specifically for iCloud. It's similar to how services such as Dropbox let you work with the same files on multiple devices more easily. 

- A Mail Drop feature will make it easier to send large files. Instead of pushing the entire file by email and overloading mail servers, the Mac will create a link that the recipient can click for the full file.

- The Mac's Safari Web browser will have more privacy controls and ways to share links more easily.

Changes to iPhones and iPads:
- Like the new Mac OS, the iOS 8 system will have a universal search tool, to cover both your device and the Internet. It will also get the iCloud Drive service.

- The new software will sport interactive notifications, so you can respond to a message without having to leave another app. It will have new gestures, such as double tapping to see a list of frequent contacts.

- A "quick type" feature promises predictive typing suggestions. For example, if you start typing, "Do you want to go to," the phone will suggest "dinner" or "movie" as the next word. Currently, the suggestions are limited to spelling corrections. 

- iOS 8 will have a built-in health-management tool to help people track their vital signs, diet and sleeping habits. Apple's chief rival, Samsung Electronics Co., incorporated fitness-related features in its latest flagship phone, the Galaxy S5.

- Apple announced new technology for controlling garage doors, thermostats and other home systems, although the company didn't say how all the pieces will be linked together through what it calls HomeKit.

- For developers, Apple announced the ability to sell app bundles at discounted prices. The fingerprint security system on the iPhone 5s also will be accessible to apps written by outside parties, not just Apple functions such as unlocking the phone.

Working together:

- Although the Mac and iOS systems are separate, Apple CEO Tim Cook says the two have been engineered to work seamlessly together.

- Apple's AirDrop feature, which has let you share files with other devices of the same type, will now let iPhones and Macs share directly with each other.

- A new "handoff" feature will let you switch devices more easily, so you can start writing an email on a phone and finish on a Mac. And when a call comes in on your iPhone, you can get caller ID information on your Mac.

- The iMessage chat service will now let you communicate with devices that aren't running iOS, such as those running the rival Android system from Google.

Announced earlier:
- Last week, Apple announced a deal to pay $3 billion for Beats Electronics, a headphone and music streaming specialist. The deal brings rapper Dr. Dre and recording impresario Jimmy Iovine to undetermined roles at Apple. During a demo Monday, Federighi placed a call to Dr. Dre to welcome him to Apple.

Coming soon:
- Apple typically announces new iPhones in September and new iPads soon after that. Many analysts also believe the company will release an Internet-connected watch as part of Apple's expansion into wearable technology.

Silent:
- Despite speculation, Apple didn't say anything about a long-awaited digital wallet that enables Apple to process payments on iPhones and iPads.

- Apple didn't provide an update on CarPlay, its project for embedding automobiles with some of the iPhone's main applications. But Apple did say it'll be possible to tap the Siri virtual assistant without pressing a button. Cars with built-in CarPlay services and radios that are compatible with CarPlay are both expected this year.

This is a simple trick, in which you’ll be changing the language, speech language and the country to get Cortana working in your country. Follow these steps for the same.

Get Cortana on Windows Phone 8.1 Smartphone in India

Step 1: The first and important step is to make sure that your Windows Phone runs on the latest Windows Phone 8.1 version. So go to settings > about > software > Phone Update. If you have already updated your device to Windows Phone 8.1 then proceed with step 2.

Step 2: Now go to Settings, select Language

Step 3: if you see the Language already has been set to English (US), then proceed with step 3 else make these changes. Tap on Add Languages and add English (US). Now again tap and hold the language and select Move up to make it to the top and it will be set as preferred language.

Step 4: Now again tap on Settings > Region > select Unites States as country. Once done, restart your device and you will find Cortana in apps list.

Step 5: Go to Settings > Speech > Speech Language

Step 6: Select English (United States) and wait until the speech pack downloaded to your device. Once downloaded, restart your device and you are ready to go.

Note: Step 5 and 6 are only necessary if your Speech Language is not English (United States). If it is already English (US) then no need to follow these steps.
